MONTVALE, New Jersey ? The new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class crossover will start at $52,025 when it begins arriving at U.S. Mercedes-Benz dealers in early August.

The price includes a $925 destination charge and reflects a $2,800 price increase over the base 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class that it replaces.

For model year 2016, Mercedes-Benz is switching to a new naming scheme on its crossovers, which range from the compact Mercedes-Benz GLA to the full-size GL and G. The midsize GLK is being replaced this fall by a new GLC.

The 2016 GLE is basically a heavily revised ML, with new headlamps, front fenders, front and rear bumpers and LED taillamps, plus a redesigned cabin. Mercedes-Benz said the GLE will have more standard equipment than its predecessor.

The 2016 GLE will be offered in the U.S. in seven versions, starting with the base GLE350, which supplants the ML350. The all-wheel-drive GLE 4matic will be priced from $54,525, including shipping.

Two high-performance AMG editions will top the range. The 2016 GLE63 AMG will be priced from $100,875, while the GLE63 S AMG will be priced from $108,025, including shipping.

A diesel variant, the GLE300d 4matic, will start at $53,425, including shipping. It goes on sale in August.

A new plug-in hybrid/electric model, the 2016 GLE550e 4matic will arrive in early September in selected states. Pricing hasn't been released.

A sportier-looking GLE Coupe, aimed at the BMW X6, is due to reach U.S. dealers in early August, but hasn't been priced yet.

That's really not too bad of a price jump.
