Mercedes has renamed its M-Class 4x4 the GLE as part of a comprehensive update that also includes a new look and more efficient engines.

The 250d diesel model that is likely to account for the majority of sales averages 52.3mpg and 140g/km - down from its predecessor's 45.6mpg and 154g/km. And for the first time there will be a plug-in hybrid in the range, called the GLE 500e 4MATIC.

This new hybrid combines a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 436bhp. Yet it also returns 85.6mpg and 78g/km of CO2 (at least officially) and can travel up to 18.5 miles on electric-only power.

Completing the GLE line-up at launch will be a 3.0-litre diesel and a high performance AMG 63 S version that can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.2sec.

The exterior restyle of the car brings it into line with the latest Mercedes family look, which was introduced with the current S-class. And inside it feels classier than before, thanks to a less cluttered dashboard and a seven-inch "floating" screen (an eight-inch screen is available as an option).

Every GLE will come with a system that's designed to keep the car stable in crosswinds, and another that can automatically apply the brakes to stop you running into the car in front. Meanwhile, options will include Active Lane Keeping Assist and Mercedes' Stop&Go Pilot, which allows the GLE to automatically follow the car in front.

The new Mercedes GLE will make its public debut at next week's New York motor show, before going on sale in July.

It will compete with the likes of the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne, and be sold alongside the sleeker GLE Coupe, which was unveiled at last year's LA show.
